Like many other countries Canada will, every now and then, have a workforce shortage in certain industries and provinces/territories. In order to compensate for this lack of workers in Canada, the IRCC (in conjunction with the ESDC) brought forth what is known as the Temporary Foreign Workers Program. But what is this program, exactly, and how does it work? To learn about this program in detail, check out what we here at Yara’s Immigration discuss in our blog post.
What is The TFWP?
In simplest terms, the Temporary Foreign Worker Program is a program that allows employers of Canadian citizenship to hire foreign workers for jobs that are otherwise unable to be filled by local workers. Although the Canadian government already allows for local companies to hire workers internationally, this program also guarantees that both citizens and permanent residents are protected.
What Requirements Are Needed To Get a TFWP Permit?
If you are looking to work under the TFWP, you must know that there are a lot of important requirements to doing so. The most important of all of these requirements involves having an LMIA (Labor Market Impact Assessment).
What is a Labor Market Impact Assessment?
A LMIA is commonly known as a document that every company must have in order to hire foreign workers. Without this document, Canadian employers are not allowed to recruit international hires. Once a company has an LMIA, you have the chance of obtaining what is known as a Temporary Work Permit.
The requirements that you must have in order to qualify for a Temporary Work Permit include:
- Receiving a valid job offer from a Canadian employer.
- Proving that once your permit expires, you will return to your home country.
- Making sure your criminal record is clean.
- Proving you are not considered a national security threat.
- Proving that you are in good health.
- Guaranteeing that you have enough money to live off of, support your family with and move back with.
- Making sure that you will not be working for an employer offering adult-catered services (escort, erotic massage services, etc).
Low Wage Workers & High Wage Workers
Applying for the programs listed in this blog post often depends heavily on your current business situation. When it comes to how you can pay your workers, employers can opt to hire low wage workers but must have an LMIA showing they were initially unable to fill the position locally. Alternatively, Canadian companies can also recruit foreign workers for roles that pay well above the average for each province & territory. The process for both types of routes is similar.
