Continue reading here to find out what the immigration application process is for skilled workers.

What is The NOC System?

NOC stands for National Occupational Classification. It is a system used by all of Canada for describing and representing different occupations. The NOC system can be used to learn about an occupation’s educational requirements, main duties, skill level, and other important information. Every job in the NOC system is given a specific and meaningful four-digit code.

For the purpose of immigration, it’s important to know the first digit in the code as it represents the industry type and the second digit of the code as it represents the skill level.

NOC Skill Level Groups

Five different skill-level groups outline and categorize jobs by their education, training, experience, and responsibilities. They include the following:

  • Skill Type 0: Management occupations. This includes positions like office managers, financial managers, advertising managers, etc.
  • Skill Level A: Advanced professional jobs. This includes positions like chemists, accountants, physicians, etc.
  • Skill Level B: Skilled trades or positions that require an apprenticeship or training. This includes positions like firefighters, police officers, etc.
  • Skill Level C: Intermediate occupations. This includes positions like bartenders, dental assistants, receptionists, etc.
  • Skill Level D: Labour positions. This includes positions like cashiers, janitors, construction labourers, etc.

Why Is a NOC Code Important for an Express Entry Application?

To apply and qualify for permanent residence, one will need to have “skilled work experience” under the skill level groups of 0, A, or B. This applies to all three federal programs of express entry including the Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Trades, and Federal Skilled Worker. To find your NOC code through the Government of Canada, click here.

Keep in mind that the NOC code you select will have to be supported by previous proof of work experience. Therefore meaning that you must provide past employer references confirming that you have worked in the proper occupation so that the government can validate this information you are submitting. If you are confused about this process, it’s best to contact a professional immigration consultant.
