Sponsor Parents and Grandparents for Canadian Immigration
Who is able to sponsor their parents or grandparents?
- You must be at least 18 years of age
- You must be a Permanent Resident or Canadian Citizen
- You must be invited to apply
- You must meet the low-income-cut-off
Before you apply to sponsor your Parents/ Grandparents you must:
- Submit the “interest to sponsor form”
- After submitting that, you will be invited to apply and only if you are invited to apply, then you can go ahead and complete the application forms.
How long will you be responsible when you sponsor your Parent/Grandparent?
The duration will be 20 years and this means that the sponsor must provide basic necessities and health care that is not covered by OHIP
Who is not able to sponsor their parents/grandparents?
- If you are less than 18 years of age
- If you will not be living in Canada when your spouse becomes a permanent resident
- If you are a temporary resident
- If you sponsored a spouse less than 3 years ago
- If you have already sponsored your spouse and it has not been processed yet
- If you are in jail, haven’t paid an immigration loan, performance bond, alimony or child-support, receive social assistance except for disability, convicted of a criminal offence, or cannot legally stay in canada as was given a removal order
Can dependent children be added onto this sponsorship?
Yes, dependent children which would be the sponsor’s brothers or sisters, or step-brothers and step-sisters as long as they are classified as a dependent child. This would mean that they are 22 years of age or younger.
The Parents/Grandparents and their dependents 18 years of age or older who are being sponsored must also complete a medical exam, biometrics, and obtain a police certificate.
