Sponsor your Spouse, Partner or Dependent Child to Canada

Who is able to sponsor their spouse, partner, or dependent child?
A permanent resident or Canadian Citizen who is at least 18 years of age or older.
A Canadian Citizen who is outside Canada is able to sponsor their spouse, partner, or dependent child but they must indicate that they will live in Canada once their spouse, partner, or dependent child becomes a Permanent Resident.

What requirement should you fulfill?
You must prove to the immigration officer that you will financially support your spouse, partner, or dependent child for the entire length of the “under-taking.” The “Under-taking” is the sponsorship agreement.

“Under-taking” for a spouse, partner, and dependent child?
For a spouse, the sponsor is financially responsible for their spouse for a duration of 3 years and during this time-period the spouse cannot receive social assistance.

For a dependent child the under-taking is 10 years or at the age of 25.

Do you have to meet the low-income-cut-off?
To sponsor a spouse, you do not need to meet LICO (low-income-cut-off). you only need to meet the low-income-cut-off when your dependent child has their own dependent child.

Who is not able to sponsor their spouse, or child?
If you are less than 18 years of age

  • If you will not be living in Canada when your spouse becomes a permanent resident
  • If you are a temporary resident
  • If you sponsored a spouse less than 3 years ago
  • If you have already sponsored your spouse and it has not been processed yet
  • If you are in jail, haven’t paid an immigration loan, performance bond, alimony or child-support, receive social assistance except for disability, convicted of a criminal offence, or cannot legally stay in Canada as was given a removal order

$85.00 this should be paid with the government fee.

Government Fees:

  • $1,080 for a spouse
  • $150.00 for a dependent child
