Study Permit in Canada

Studying in Canada gives international students the opportunity to study their desired field of study as well as embrace the diverse cultures in different parts of Canada. This will enable international students to enhance their English proficiency as well as choose the right career for themselves with the appropriate guidance and advice.

Requirements and Eligibility:

In order for a foreign national to obtain a study permit in Canada, they must first apply at a “Designated Learning Institution” (DLI) and obtain an acceptance letter from them. Once the acceptance letter is received, the foreign national can apply for a Study Permit.

For a Study Permit, the foreign national must write a “Statement of Purpose” letter indicating their valid reasons for why they chose to study in Canada. Also, a letter from the foreign nationals’ parents must be written to inform the government of Canada that they will provide financial support to their child and provide evidence through bank statements.

Language Requirements:

For a Study Permit a foreign national must obtain a minimum of CLB 6 from an approved language test. This test must be less than 2 years old as they are only valid for a duration of 2 years.

Government fees and proof of funds:

The government fee to apply for a study permit is CAD$150.00
The minimum required proof of funds for a study permit not including their tuition fees is a minimum of CAD$10,000.00 per year.

Working during your studies:

As an international student, you are able to work a maximum of 20 hours per week off campus but the student can work as many hours as they wish on campus. In order to work as an international student, the student must have a valid study permit along with a social insurance number. A foreign national can only begin working once their studies start and not before that.

Studying and coming to Canada with a spouse:

An international student who is married and with a valid study permit can have their spouse apply for an open work permit which allows them to work while the international student is studying.
